CTA Registration & Online Theory
As part of the assessment process, drivers are registered with the Community Transport Association (CTA) to complete the required MiDAS online theory component. Drivers will receive access to the theory module before their practical assessment.
Drivers should allow approximately 45–60 minutes to complete the online learning and theory assessment, although this may vary depending on individual experience and pace.
Once completed, the practical assessment can be arranged and the relevant records maintained through the Community Transport Association portal.
Full MiDAS scope, no components omitted
Driver Behaviour
Vehicle Readiness
Route Management
Observation of hazard perception, speed management, mirror discipline, and passenger safety during live route conditions. Every observed behaviour is recorded.
Pre-drive inspection covering mirrors, tyres, controls, emergency equipment, and seating configuration. Deficiencies are documented before the route assessment begins.
Evaluation of route planning decisions, passenger boarding procedures, and response to road conditions. Assessed against MiDAS operator standards, not general driving criteria.

Every component assessed. Every result documented.
Driver behaviour, vehicle readiness, and route management — evaluated in sequence against the full Midas framework. The scope does not vary by client.

Practical assessment, clear reporting, consistent standards
Step 1 — Pre-Assessment Briefing
The assessor reviews the vehicle documentation and explains the assessment process to the driver, confirming the scope of the assessment. Most practical assessments take around 45–60 minutes per driver, although additional time may be required for drivers who are new to minibus driving or unfamiliar with the vehicle being used.
For drivers who would benefit from extra support, a Driver Familiarisation Session is available. This practical introduction covers the vehicle's controls, safety features and operating procedures, helping drivers gain confidence before their assessment. Sessions typically take 20–30 minutes, although additional time may be required depending on previous experience and familiarity with the vehicle. Available for just £25 per driver.
Step 2 — On-Road Assessment
A structured on-road assessment of approximately 45–60 minutes per driver, conducted on a pre-planned route incorporating a variety of driving environments. The assessor observes and records driver performance in real time, assessing safe driving practices, vehicle control and hazard awareness. To provide an accurate reflection of normal driving behaviour, the assessor will only intervene if safety requires it.
Step 3 — Written Assessment Report
Following the assessment, a written report is issued detailing the assessment outcome, key observations and any recommendations. Assessment records are also uploaded to the Community Transport Association portal, providing a clear and auditable record of driver competency and MiDAS compliance.
